Westport is on track to become a world class model of an ‘ideal town’ after winning yet another major award this week of €5 million, having been selected as the number one Small Town in Ireland in the Smarter Travel sustainable transport awards.

The rate for Westport town remains unchanged following the town’s budget meeting which took place last Thursday evening.

Following the “brilliant news” that Allergan is investing millions of euro in Westport, Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, Councillor Christy Hyland, said the town is “bucking the national trend”.

The announcement on Monday by Allergan Pharmaceuticals that it plans to create 200 new jobs over the next four years and invest $350 million at its plant in Westport, with an additional estimated 250 indirect jobs during the construction period of the extension, was feted as a top news story for Ireland both nationally and internationally this week.

New Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council Councillor Christy Hyland said that he “will walk the walk, rather than talk the talk” during his time in the chair.

Killala based councillor Jarlath Munnelly has welcomed the decision of An Taisce to withdraw its appeal to An Bord Pleanála against the Mayo Power project at Killala. The Fine Gael councillor, who had been very critical of An Taisce’s decision to object to this project, stated that this was a sensible decision for all parties involved. “I am delighted that An Taisce has withdrawn their appeal. I think this is a good decision for all parties, as this is a very sound, sustainable, project with many benefits for both the local community and the environment.”

The members of Mayo County Council paid tribute to the late Myles Staunton at the beginning of their AGM this week. Before the order of business of the meeting, Fine Gael whip Cllr Joe Mellet asked the members to have a minute’s silence in honour of the former councillor, TD and senator. Cllr Michael Burke who was chairing his last meeting of the council also passed on his sympathies to the family of the late Mr Staunton as did county manager Peter Hynes on behalf of the staff of the council. Cllr Mellet also indicated that the council would pay a fuller tribute to Mr Staunton at its July meeting.
